Who Can Train Employees to Use Respirators?
What OSHA expects for “effective” respirator training — and how to choose (and document) a trainer in-house.
OSHA Training Requirement (29 CFR 1910.134)
29 CFR 1910.134 requires employers to provide effective training to employees who are required to use respirators. Training must be completed before the worker uses a respirator, and must be repeated at least annually.
Trainer qualifications: The standard doesn’t mandate a specific certification for the trainer. The focus is that training is effective and understandable to employees. Best practice is to designate someone with knowledge, training, and experience in workplace hazards and respirator use — and document the designation in writing.
