How it works

4 steps to train employees on respirable crystalline silica

  1. 1
Create a Silica Exposure Control Plan

Use the included plan template and policy to document tasks, tools, controls, and housekeeping procedures for your work.

  2. 2
    Designate a silica trainer

Choose a knowledgeable employee to lead silica training. Use the Trainer Designation Form to document their role.

  3. 3
    Conduct silica training

Deliver the classroom portion with the video, e-learning module, or PowerPoint slides. Then complete the hands-on portion using the equipment and materials employees actually use.

  4. 4
    Inspect & monitor

Have your competent person perform frequent inspections of job sites, materials, and equipment to make sure the plan is followed and controls are working.

Hands-on training is required. OSHA’s silica standard requires that workers be trained on the actual tools, materials, and controls used on the job. The kit gives you the classroom and documentation piece; you complete it with site-specific, hands-on instruction and ongoing inspections.
Common questions

Silica training FAQ

Who can certify employees on silica?
The employer can designate an employee to train and certify workers. OSHA does not require this designation to be in writing, but using the included Trainer Designation Form is a smart way to document your program.
Will this work as a Train-the-Trainer?
Yes. A designated trainer can review the training materials, customize the plan for your company, and then deliver silica training to your employees on an ongoing basis.
Is the silica training OSHA-compliant?
The materials are built around OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1153 and cover the required topics. You complete compliance by using them with hands-on, site-specific training and regular inspections.
Can I get training just for myself?
Yes. If you only need silica training for yourself or a small number of employees, use the Silica Safety for Construction Online Course .
